How to make 21 hair ties and a headband out of an old pair of kids tights

September 8, 2015

It's amazing how quick kids grow out of their clothes. I seem to be forever sorting out items that are too small.

I recently sorted out my 11 year old daughters clothes, socks, tights etc.. and found that she has 6 pairs of 60 denier tights that are too small. They are all perfectly ok and as charity shops don't take tights, they were heading for the bin.

Until I had a little thought.

I wonder if I cut them up, could I make hair ties out of them? Both myself and my daughter have long hair, and we are forever losing hair ties so we can never have too many! Plus it saves money, and I like that!

As the tights have got Lycra in, they have some stretch. So they are perfect for hair ties. I got 21 hair ties and one headband out of one pair of age 10 tights!

Here's how I did it...

Step one...

Grab an old pair of tights that are still in good condition but are just too small.

Step two...

With some sharp scissors (dressmaking scissors work best), snip off the toes of the tights.

Step three...

Cut strips about 2 inches wide. All the way up to the top of the legs.

Step four...

You should be left with the toes, 21 strips and a waist.

Step five...

Cut 3 inches from the top of the waistband, discard the rest.

And there you have it! Easy peasy way to get some hair ties from an old pair of tights!
